Letters & e-mail

The Era has done it again, persecuting someone without getting the facts. Have any of their reporters ever graduated from college with a journalism degree? It is obvious that they only hear one side of a story before printing it as fact, when in reality there are TWO sides to every story. Oooohhhhh, I do wish I could say what I'm talking about. However, because of an ongoing legal case, I am not free to do so.

• C.G., Boca Raton, Florida

EDITOR'S NOTE: Thank you for your support. Many other people are of the same opinion as you; but yes, they do have degrees. Unfortunately, like dogs, just having papers is not enough. They have to be housebroken first. The three named *#$^%@#, while looking good, and talking a good game, have never learned the basics. They had no real teacher. As for the Fiction Writer, he has to learn to spell "Marjorie" before anyone can take him seriously.

Jim Buck is a professor of journalism? Hard to believe. I strongly suggest he dig out his dictionary and look up the words LIBEL and SLANDER!

• Name witheld, online comment

EDITOR'S NOTE: Thank you. We agree.

Can you believe the gall these people have (i.e., the politicians, the professional owners, the professional leagues, and special interest groups)? They now are proposing the use of $600 million taxpayer dollars to build two new stadiums for the Pirates and Steelers and they call it Plan B. Plan A was unceremoniously dumped by the Pittsburgh area taxpayers. I have another idea; instead of a sin tax to help finance these ventures, how about a righteous tax that obtains money from non-taxpaying churches to fund these new stadiums. I for one get sick and tired of seeing athletes praying to God and thanking Him for winning. If they are taking up God's valuable time to ask Him to insure their victories, then a righteous tax may be something whose time has come.

• Tongue Firmly in Cheek, PR, Warren, PA

EDITOR'S NOTE: Great letter and a fine idea. We should note that Allegheny County Commissioner Larry Dunn is firmly opposed to any plan that does not have the wealthy team owners paying for the new stadiums. He has gone as far as to ask the Steelers to see their books. Imagine the nerve of him!

Hello Mountain Laurel Review! I just had to send hellos and all that from North Carolina. I am glad to have found this site, as sometimes I miss my old home. I look forward to getting caught up on all the Bradford happenings.

• Take care, Renee D.

Really enjoy having your magazine online. Thanks.

• Susan from Long Island

Bud, I am now convinced that you not only should have been a lawyer but sincerely want to be a lawyer.

• Name withheld by the Editor but it is a load of laughs.

I am absolutely thrilled to see you online. Getting news from back home is a real treat. I have some opinions about the politics and police in Bradford, as well as the Era not getting their facts straight, but will not state them as I occasionally go home for a visit. I would hate to call my children to bail me out of jail for speaking my opinion.

• Carol

EDITOR’S NOTE: We can understand your concern. We have spoken our minds and have come under the direct persecution of law enforcement in two states which include local and state police and the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Don’t ever believe that they will not use their power to get back at you. They will and they do it all the time.

I did not realize that I was writing a letter to a publication. I simply wanted to thank you for going online. The "good ol’ boy" mentality of those in power in Bradford precludes me from stating opinions or having my name published. As for the Era, they try and convict a person based on innuendo and rumor rather than facts. Unfortunately, their inaccurate reporting has the power to ruin a person’s life. In recent years, I have weighed the pros and cons of moving back to Bradford. Alas, the cons won.

• CG

EDITOR’S NOTE: Tell us about it! Obviously you know Bradford, McKean County, and our buddies at the Era. The recent attempt to smear Carolyn Gulnac is their latest in a long line of misleading stories that you obviously are able to see through. They have done this many times to our publisher, Mr. Beck. Odd that other people feel the same way that we do.

You need to know that the boys at your favorite place, The Bradford Club, agree with Harold Beck about the Bradford Regional Airport. Knock me over with a feather but the consensus is that the manager, Craig Bickle, is the problem and when he retires, then and only then will the Airport be able to move forward. They were all shocked at his insistence to send grant money back to the state when the airport is in drastic need of improvement. His backward thinking only mirrors a do-nothing authority. They were really in a dilemma when they realized that they were agreeing with Harold Beck and were in favor of dumping Bickle and the authority members who are not from McKean County. It just goes to show that politics does make strange bed fellows. I think the whole thing is hilarious and tell Harold to go and get them all. If the airport will not give McKean County the majority of votes, don’t give them the full funding. Keep up the good work.

• Unsigned, Bradford

I loved the article about the real mayor of Bradford, Ray McMahon. You hit it all right smack between the eyes. There was not one thing in the article that I disagree with. Keep telling it like it is. We have needed a voice like The Mountain Laurel Review for a very long time.

• TV, Bradford

What a great issue you had with your Winter Publication. There was something in it for everyone and I just couldn’t put it down. Keep up the good work.

You guys must be a bunch of crazy Irishmen who are IRA sympathizers. Is it true that you support the radical IRA in their war against England. Come clean with us.

• An Englishman who can’t trust you.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Guilty as charged on my part. I am crazy and I am an Irishman. The chief is a direct descendant of Attila the Hun (on his mother’s side) and cannot claim to be Irish even though there is a suspicion that over several generations some impurity crept in on his dad’s side which accounts for the red hair. However, the chief has an intense dislike for the English and is especially critical of how they always expect America to bail them out time and time again in war.

The movie Independence Day has the British pilots hiding in the desert and when they hear that the Americans have a plan to take down the invaders, they immediately say, "It’s about time." That absolutely sends the chief over the edge. As for Ireland, the chief is very adamant, as I am also. We share the opinion that England should go home. Leave Ireland to the Irish and hands off! Yes, we are a bit crazy.

I support Harold Beck in his stand against a Low Level Nuclear Waste Dump in McKean County. How soon The Bradford Era forgets how it was also Harold Beck who first started complaining about secret dealing with the refinery and how fifty million dollars was not enough to clean up one hundred and eleven years of polluting our ground and our water. He was right about the secret dealing that was going on and when he called the negotiators the LOSERS CLUB, he was dead on with the tag because ultimately we will be the losers when it becomes public that the city signed off on making Witco responsible for the cleanup. Connie Cavallaro and Ray McMahon will be long gone and the taxpayers of Bradford and Foster Township will be left holding the bag. More people will die of strange and rare cancers but no one will look at what is buried beneath certain garages, paved drive ways, and even US 219. ARG will go through the motions with one back hoe moving dirt around and pretending to clean up the site, but in the end we will all have to pay for this fiasco. Keep up the good work you guys and keep giving them hell. At least we finally have one commissioner who is not afraid to say what we need to know.

• Name withheld, Bradford

No wonder the Attorney General is hounding Harold Beck over $300. He is the only one who will speak up for the people. All of the real politicians can’t stand the light of day and that is exactly what he does. He has exposed the good old boy agreement where we pay all of the money for the airport which is here and get out voted and held back by smaller counties who pay little if any to the support of the airport. We need to tell the Attorney General to back off and stay out of our politics. We elected him and no Harrisburg politician will change that.

• RG Bradford

Will Harold Beck ever put the complete story of the Kathy Wilson Murder in a book like he has done with his CORNPLANTER CHRONICLES? I am missing some parts and I know that other people might like to read it from the beginning.

• GS Falconer

EDITOR’S NOTE: At this time he is having the complete volume printed in a book. It will be available in early June once the copyright and the printing is completed. Thank you for your continued interest.
